Living in Isolation: 8 Tips from a Retired NASA Astronaut

As the days go by and people are having to get more creative being stuck inside their homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many are struggling with self-isolation.

Captain Scott Kelly, a retired NASA astronaut, knows the feeling all too well after he spent a year on the International Space Station. This mission made history as he was the first to complete a year in space, the single longest space mission by an American astronaut.

He shared eight things he learned while working in space, watching the world spin beneath his feet:

  1. Follow a schedule
  2. But pace yourself
  3. Go outside
  4. You need a hobby
  5. Keep a journal
  6. Take time to connect
  7. Listen to experts
  8. We are all connected

One of the side effects of seeing Earth from the perspective of space, at least for me, is feeling more compassion for others. As helpless as we may feel stuck inside our homes, there are always things we can do.

Captain Scott Kelly will be in Texarkana next year on April 1, 2021, as part of our annual Distinguished Speaker Series. This event raises money for student scholarships. Reservations and sponsorship opportunities are available online at Tamut.edu/Farmers.
